Academic Support

Teachers and staff design weekly BC Prep opportunities for students with the goal of creating real-time, academic interventions during the school day so students do not have to wait for an open opportunity to meet with their teachers.

Each week, teachers can "draft" students whom they need to work with into their BC Prep session for reteaching and support. Any "undrafted" students then get to choose which teacher or staff member they spend their BC Prep time with for that week. Throughout the weeks some staff also offer fun or enrichment activities that students can also choose.

Bear Creek offers students who need additional math support the opportunity to be a part of our High-Dosage Math Tutoring class. This class is run by our interventionist and is aimed at providing intense, targeted math support through the Brainfuse platform.

Reading support may be provided to ninth- and 10th-grade students who are behind grade level in their reading skills through an elective class that builds reading comprehension and fluency. This support may manifest as a unique class for students, or it may be intentionally built into their schedule via their English language arts class.

Most ninth- and some 10th-grade students are scheduled into a study hall as a seventh class. Study hall is an additional structured time within the school day for students to complete their homework and get support from teachers. Students are expected to have homework or academic reading material with them on a daily basis. Course credit is based on academic engagement and attendance.

Tutorial is a class period to both complete credit recovery and receive an elective credit. While completing credit recovery, students will be given a progress grade that reflects their attendance and progress "actual" grade in Edgenuity. Once credit recovery is completed, a student will receive the grade for the recovered class, and if eligible, a free period. If a student needs a class hour or an elective credit, the student will remain in tutorial and be assigned a grade based on attendance and completing work for other classes.

The tutor room is available to all students during their free period or study hall period to support student learning. Students may voluntarily go for help or may be assigned to attend the tutor room by a teacher, counselor or administrator.
