Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning in Jeffco

Jeffco Public Schools creates and maintains a positive climate and culture in schools that is inclusive and safe for students, families and staff. With a commitment to empowering successful and productive citizens,  the district supports the growth of students through leveled, evidence-based implementation of social emotional learning programming.

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.

Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

  • Self-Awareness
  • Self-Management
  • Social Awareness
  • Relationship Skills
  • Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)

SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.

Social-Emotional Learning at Bear Creek

At Bear Creek High School, we value the whole student and believe learning will not be successful without building relationships and understanding students’ strengths and challenges.

SEL at School

At Bear Creek, administrators, counselors, faculty and staff aim to know every student by name, strength and need. Each student is unique and valued at BCHS, and our goal is to build relationships while helping guide students through their four years of high school and beyond.

Bear Creek has numerous activities and events throughout the school year that help teachers and staff get to know their students.

"SEL can help all young people thrive personally and academically, develop and maintain positive relationships, become lifelong learners, and contribute to a more caring, just world."

Connections Lessons

Connections (seminar and homeroom) is a weekly class in which students come together and receive a lesson from their advisory teacher. They will have the same teacher and group of students in Connections every year. Each grade differentiates topics based on their developmental needs.

  • Grade 9: Understanding high school, credits and building relationships
  • Grade 10: Exploration of career interests and solidifying study habits
  • Grade 11: Narrowing down colleges and careers
  • Grade 12: Making plans for life after high school

Who builds the lessons?

A team of counselors, administrators, a prevention specialist and instructional coach collaborate to build Connections lessons.

If you have questions about Connections content, contact your counselor or administrator.
